I want……in no particular order, but all at once is preferred…..
- Peace within
- Peace without
- Bubbles upon entering a room
- Flowers eternally blooming within view
- Chocolate
- A jar containing the laughter of my son when he was three years old
- A clean house
- My thyroid when I was 24
- Thunderheads outlined by lightning and rumbles of thunder in the distance
- Fatty edges of a grilled steak, burnt until they melt slightly
- Applause
- Green, green grass that feels like carpet beneath my feet
- Red wine
- Backyard garden laden with colorful vegetables
- Grilled Red Snapper in a tarragon wine sauce
- A purpose
- Cats purring by my ears
- My grandmother’s feather pillows and handmade quilts
- White wine
- To believe that I’m really beautiful regardless of my age or shape or weight
- Financial security
- Dog kisses
- Aquariums filled with orange, turquoise, and magenta fishes
- Cheese fried crisp but still gooey in the middle
- Concerts on warm evenings
- Waves lapping just beyond my back door
- To tell a story…..
As my father was want to say when I wanted something, “I know where people want ice water.” He was referring to the cavernous nether-regions below our reality. But he has a point.
There are people in our reality that want. They want
- Food
- Shoes
- Education
- Sanity (the real kind)
- Safety
- Enough for one more month or week or day or hour
- A bed
- Medical care
- Clean water
- Happy memories
- Freedom from addiction
- Family
- To belong
Does their want diminish in any way what I want?
Nope.
But it does inform it.
I still want flowers and applause and purpose but maybe – just maybe – what I want has something to do with helping other folks get what they want too.
Maybe there is a connection between inner and outer peace and all of us providing for each other.
Maybe what I want means a little bit more than just putting it on a list and checking it off as I gather in my stores.
Maybe what I want – no, need – is a community whose needs and wants are realized by belonging to each other.
Have mercy O God.
And please bring chocolate.
We all need chocolate.
Beautifully said.
